Inukshuk

This project aimed to transform a large area of flat rough grass. The design incorporated curving tracks around a series of mounds, sinuous drystone walling and three seating/utility areas. Stone for the project was sourced on site from the remains of an old farm building.
A large quantity of earth had to be excavated and used to create a new topography. A 10-tonne dumper was brought in to move the earth, along with the 50 or more tonnes of stone retrieved from the far side of the property.
A sizeable granite monolith was uncovered, and this made for an interesting focal point after being securely set on a plinth.
The large area in front of the monolith was prepared and sown with wild flower seed, and surprisingly was still flowering in December! The plan is to mow this flat once the seeds have dropped and wait for the reappearance of the flowers next season.
A neat perimeter can be mowed around the flowers to make it look deliberate and perhaps create shapes in the field of flowers. The owner wished to undertake the planting of the bare earth areas herself with trees and shrubs, this being a long term project over the next few seasons.
