Terracing
Another difficult slope for YourLandscaping to convert to a multi-functional space. The owners wanted an open lawn area and space for a kids’ playground. They required the sloping ground to be levelled for ease of use, a platform for a garden shed, raised beds & composting bins. They also liked the idea of a small patio area on which to enjoy the evening sun.
The ground at this site is particularly poor: sloping, very hard and desperately stony. Very little topsoil meant that considerable time was spent excavating and removing hard subsoil and back-filling with imported earth in order to give a good surface for lawns & beds. A large existing drain at the top of the garden had to be retained to guard against field run-off, and this dictated the eventual height of the top terrace.
A low stone wall and steps retains the lawn, with a boulder wall behind to produce the required height to the final level. All bare areas of earth were bark mulched and the lawn seeded – the owners wished to undertake their own planting in the subsequent months.
